The hatred Omar Mateen felt for gay people was so intense that he went on a shooting spree that left 50 people dead at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. It seems that this hatred may have been inherited from his father.

Seddique Mir Mateen claims that religion had nothing to do with his son’s murder spree, but has demonstrated otherwise when a recent video uploaded to Facebook expressed his religion’s intolerance of homosexuals.

In a statement that Mir Mateen sent to CBS News, he said that his son was wrong to kill those people because “God will punish those involved in homosexuality” and it is “not an issue that humans should deal with.”

The elder Mateen expressed remorse for what his son has done and claims that his family is appalled.

“We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren’t aware of any action he is taking,” Mir Seddique said. “We are in shock like the whole country.”

In many ways, Mir Mateen’s opinion on homosexuality is very similar to those of Islamic scholar Farrokh Sekaleshfar, who also spoke against Omar Mateen’s actions on the bases that the government should be killing gay people.

Less than a month ago, Sekaleshfar spoke at the Husseini Islamic Center near Orlando where he said that gay people should be sentenced to death.
