Donald Trump stand-in Rachel Campos-Duffy went on CNN on Sunday in an effort to divert the public’s attention from a recent gaffe made by a different Trump surrogate regarding illegal immigrants and “taco truck” by claiming Democratic policies were damaging the mobile restaurant business.
Last week, Marco Gutierrez, founder of Latinos for Trump, said during an interview on MSNBC that if nothing was done about illegal immigration, soon there would be “taco trucks on every corner.”
After the Trump campaign received plenty of ridicule over the statement, Campos-Duffy tried to use the taco truck statement to attack the Democrats.
“What I think is really interesting is that taco trucks really are the ultimate symbol of American entrepreneurial capitalism,” she insisted. “And I think what people want to know is not what some first-time surrogate fumbled, what they want to know about is who is going to help people who want to start taco trucks.”
“And liberal policies have always over-regulated food trucks,” Campos-Duffy continued. “What people want to know is who is going to help people start businesses, let them grow, become financially independent. Liberals over-regulate these kind of small business owners and conservatives help them achieve their dreams.”
“Excellent pivot,” CNN host Jake Tapper stated.
“I have never seen spin like that,” Clinton campaign surrogate Bakari Sellers said mockingly.
Trump supporter tried to defend Campos-Duffy and claimed that he liked „the taco truck analogy.”
“Those are people that are business owners, they’re working hard,” Bauer opined. “We just don’t want the people here that are stealing the hubcaps.”
“Except [Gutierrez] was saying that we don’t want taco trucks,” Tapper pointed out.
