Penn Jillette, known for being a libertarian and an atheist, surprised many when he came out of favor of anti-discrimination laws that would force business owners to bake cakes or shoot videos of gay marriages, even if they don’t agree with such things. “These people are not being asked to engage in gay sex or even endorse gay sex,” he said, and added “They’re being asked to sell flowers and cake to people…We’re asking that maybe they can treat people the same as other people and that does not seem unreasonable”.
He stated that most of those businesses don’t have problems with serving gay customers in other contexts. The problem appears when these gay customers want services for their weddings. Penn concludes that business owners don’t refuse gays per se and adds that the market has generated businesses that would gladly cater to gay and lesbian couples.
In an interview, he also shared his controversial knowledge about why these issues are capturing the public imagination. He said that it seems like anyone under 30 is OK with gay rights, but that it also seems like a bunch of people lost a battle that was very important to them. “All we need is a little bit of time and this will simply be a joke,” he concluded.
