The Republican presidential hopeful and Texas senator, Ted Cruz came under a gruelling regimen of questioning on Wednesday as he appeared on the CBS morning show, This Morning. The hosts of the show were keen to enquire about Cruz’s stance on recommending that Muslim neighbourhoods be watched by law enforcement agents.
This call by Cruz, was not taken too kindly by uniformed administrators, especially the Chief of Police in New York, Bill Bratton, who has been in law enforcement across various metropolitans countrywide, including Boston and Los Angeles.
Following the tragic attacks on Brussels, Cruz declared, “We need to empower law enforcement to patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized.” Bratton was quick to respond, saying, “He doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about,” Bratton said. “Quite frankly I took great offense at that statement. I have almost 1,000 Muslim officers in the NYPD. Ironically, when he’s running around here, we probably have a few Muslim officers guarding him.”
The battle lines were now drawn and Cruz came back at Bratton, calling him a ‘’Democratic political henchmann’’ to the current Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio. During the show, the hosts wanted to know how Cruz thought it would be feasible for officers to go through 3 million American Muslims, who , in the words of Cruz, are not ‘’ghetto – ized’’ in the sprawling radicalized communes.
The senator did however profess ignorance with regard to the Muslim population in the country. “So you’re saying that law enforcement should surveil a number of Muslims and you don’t even know how many Muslims are in America,” Norah O’Donnell, the show’s co – host, quizzed. She went on to point out that Bratton had clarified the fact that the close – knit ‘Muslim neighborhoods’ found in Europe were not prevalent in the United States of America.
Picking up from where her partner had left, co – host, Gayle King chimed in, “There are so many people that say that your comments are decidedly anti-Muslim, and that you’re playing right into the hands of ISIS.” She added, “You’re giving them ammunition to come after us, to really take action against us.” Cruz however, chose to circumvent the question and went on a rant about ‘’political correctness.’’
